About Neck & Shoulder Pain
Your neck and shoulders contain muscles, skin, cells, bones, nerves, arteries, and veins, ligaments and other supporting structures. Many conditions cause pain in the neck and shoulder area. Some are life threatening such as heart attacks and major traumas, and some are not so dangerous like simple strains, breaks or contusions. Shoulder and neck pain results from injury to muscles and ligaments. The spinal cord, heart, lungs,liver, pancreas and other abdominal organs can cause neck and shoulder pain. Broken collarbone: Falling on your outstretched arm causing your collarbone to crack. Bursitis: A bursa, a sac over the joints provides cushioning to carteledge, joints and muscles. The bursa may become swollen and painful after injury. Heart attacks may also cause shoulder or neck pain, known as referred pain. Broken shoulder blade: An injury to the shoulder blade usually is associated with relatively forceful trauma. Gallbladder disease causes a pain located in the right shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries: The rotator cuff muscles at the shoulder can be injured playing sports with lots of throwing or after repetitive use over a long time. Shoulder or separation: The collarbone and shoulder blade connected by a ligament. With trauma to the shoulder, the ligament stretched or torn. Whiplash Injury to the ligamentous and muscular structures of the neck, back and shoulder -- a sudden acceleration or deceleration, like a car accident. Tendonitis: tendons connect muscles to bones. With strain, tendons become swollen and causing pain.
